Meet Our Summer Intern, Mahrya!
It’s time for us to bid farewell to our second summer Intern, Mahrya. Mahrya spent the last six weeks at our Montreal Head Office where she worked as part of the Marketing team and saw first-hand what it takes to run a national fashion brand. Wanna learn more about Mahyra, UK vs. Canadian style and her time at Suzy? Then keep reading!
Hi Mahrya! So, tell us, what are you studying at school and where?
I am currently doing a double major in Political Science and Economics at Concordia University!
You were born in Montreal but grew up in England, before moving back to Montreal. Where do you consider home?
I actually consider both home for different reasons. England is where my family is and where I grew up, so it will always be home for me. But, I’ve made so many new memories here in Canada and it has become just like home too, I really love both equally.
You’re studying Political Science and Economics at University. So, what made you want to intern at a Fashion brand?
Fashion has always been something I have been passionate about and loved ever since I can remember. I wanted to intern at a Fashion brand as it has always been a goal of mine to experience the behind the scenes of a successful retail company and learn all the different ways it functions. I’ve always been very curious, so I love learning new things and interning at Suzy has allowed me to broaden my passion for the fashion industry and I couldn’t be more thankful.
What is your favourite thing about Montreal? How do you spend your spare time here?
That’s easy, the food and the people! I love how diverse Montreal is and how there are so many people from different backgrounds that coexist and accept one another. I love that you can walk down the street and find new and exciting things to do and eat at any time of the day. I spend my time exploring different parts of the city, drinking lots of Tim Hortons, and finding new stores to shop at in different boroughs of the city.
What do you love about Fashion?
I love how expressive and universal fashion can be. I love that no matter where you are in the world, people use fashion to express themselves and their mood, or personality. It’s fascinating to me that something as simple as clothing can have such a great impact on who you are as an individual and your identity.
How would you describe your personal style?
My style changes all the time, usually according to my mood that day! I love vintage clothes and looking trendy but as long as I feel confident in my outfit, that’s all that really matters to me.
Do you think UK and Canadian style is different? If so, which is your style most in line with?
Oh definitely! I’ve found that fashion in the UK is much more ahead than it is in Canada. I do a lot of my shopping in England so I would have to say that my style is most in line with British fashion.
What are your favourite pieces from our latest collection?
These are some of my fav pieces!
What did you enjoy most about your internship at Suzy?
I can honestly say that I enjoyed everything about my internship at Suzy. From helping plan our weekly social photo shoots, to choosing contest winners and writing drafts for What’s New Wednesday and Fashion Friday, I enjoyed it all. Everyone was so welcoming and willing to help with whatever I needed and made me feel like part of a team straight away.
What did you learn about the fashion industry that you didn’t already know?
My internship at Suzy has taught me many things that go on behind the scenes that not many people get to experience. I have a whole new appreciation for how meticulous taking photos are for social media content and how important SKU numbers are for finding the right item. The fashion industry is very complex and it’s interesting to learn how it really functions first hand.
What are your plans for the future? Did interning at Suzy change your ideas about what you’d like to do in the future?
Interning at Suzy has truly opened my eyes on the way the fashion world works. It has validated that this is something I love to do and want to do as a profession. In my future, I plan on furthering my education and doing a Masters in Digital Marketing in London and continue to work in the fashion industry!
